Strong Customer Authentication

What plans do you have to modify the supporter journey for Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) on JustGiving?

Card transactions made on JustGiving are already fully SCA compliant, though it’s worth noting the industry deadline for meeting SCA requirements has been postponed to March 2022. Not all issuing banks and merchants yet meet the new requirements.

SCA compliance hinges heavily on the implementation of 3DS to verify online card donations. 3DS checks are already performed on the majority of transactions that fall under SCA rules on the platform. This includes (but is not limited to) transactions made on cards registered in the UK/EU.

Some donations are exempt from SCA validation, such as some made on credit/debit cards not registered in UK/EU or submitted as part of an automated, regular schedule. The JustGiving platform manages these exceptions to ensure SCA compliance is met whilst minimising the impact on the donor experience.

What impact do you expect this change to have on donation volume and value?

In most cases, the donor experience remains largely unaffected but depending on the profiling logic implemented by specific card issuers, the 3DS process may prompt the donor to provide additional authentication, usually biometrically (face/fingerprint recognition). This profiling applies to all transactions made online, not only on JustGiving.

Whilst some marginal effects are to be expected on donor friction and abandonment, SCA has observable, positive overall effects on key payments metrics, these include:

  • Lower incidence of fraud
  • Lower incidence of charged back or refunded transactions
  • Increased payment authorisation rates

All of which result in more funds ultimately reaching our customers.

What changes will charities on the JustGiving platform need to make in order to be compliant?

JustGiving is a managed platform, so no additional work is required from customer charities. Additionally, donations made to you on the JustGiving platform will continue to benefit from our sustained investment in optimising payment performance.

What difference will these changes make to charity reporting?

No changes to report formats or content will be required.
